Week#10 - Speech Mimicking

Speech Mimicking  involves using a variety to techniques to copy the speaking patterns of a recorded piece of language with the goal of getting close to native speaker pronunciation and intonation.

The method includes:

  • Make notes on the  transcript to indicate pauses, changes in pitch, and other speech patterns
  • Listen/Repeat (sentence by sentence)
  • Listen/Whisper Adjust playback speed if necessary.
  • Record again. Listen. Circle parts that need the most improvement.
    Practice those parts.
  • Listen/ Shadow Read (turn the volume down)
  • Read lines into Google Translate.
  • Try anything else you think will be helpful

ASSIGNMENT

Speech Mimicking Practice
Select a scene from our Scene List (or select your own that has at least 60 seconds of a single person monologue).  Check with Jeff to see if it’s OK.
Watch your practice video. Choose at least a one minute portion of the video.   Without practicing, read and record yourself speaking the text. You can record yourself with video or just audio.
Send that recording by Nov. 4.

Use different techniques to practice and improve the way you read that text.
When you’re finished practicing, record an ‘after practice’ recording.  Either post ‘after’ recordings in the class Band or upload them to your Google/Naver Drive or Clyp.it  and share them with Jeff
(pufslebow@gmail.com)
Due. Nov. 13
(remember you don’t have to do the whole scene - just 60+ seconds.  You can choose which 60 seconds to practice)
