I. Description:
While this is a textbook based conversation course, it is also a very interactive social experience that is geared toward developing a positive learning community. We will focus on developing communicative strategies, functional vocabulary, presentation abilities, and pronunciation skills. Students will actively engage with each other and with the instructor in an effort to improve their speaking skills in a variety of environments and contexts.   Hanging Out

II. Course textbook/resources
Touchstone Level 3, 2nd edition.  Please make sure to bring your textbook to each class. In addition,  we will use the course website at: http://EGL108.blogspot.kr/ and make use of technology to enhance the learning and social experience.   We will use a Google Document for our Group Notes, Quizlet Flashcards for studying purposes, and a Naver Band for group messaging and in-class activities.


III. Instruction Methods:
The course uses a variety of instructional methods including textbook-based activities and discussions. We will also engage in debates, partner practice, small group discussions, and presentations. Practical speaking activities (both individual and group-based) are emphasized.

IV. Grading
Students will be assessed according to the following criteria
20% Attendance
20%  Participation
20% Assignments
20% Mid-Term
20% Final Exam
Grades will be distributed based on the required university quotas:  25% A’s, 45% B’s,  30% C’s
The midterm exam will be a one-on-one conversation with the instructor. The final exam will involve a project based discussion.  Plagiarism (intentional or not) will result in significant loss of points or possibly an ‘F’.  

Instructor Notes
Please make every effort to arrive on time. Those arriving more than five minutes late will be marked tardy. Those more than 20 minutes late will be marked absent for that hour.
* Students who start ‘packing up’ before class has been dismissed will also be marked tardy!

 b) send an email to puflebow@gmail explaining your absence (if you think it should be excused)
Please turn cell phones off unless they are being used as part of a class activity.
